Pros
Fast download, burned to CD, booted, created bootable USB- it works! Comes with lots of apps, but is so small that it fits on a USB flashdrive and loads into RAM. Will work on an old machine, even if the hard drive is trashed. Use to rescue data.
Cons
The media player (Gxine) did not work, but I'll try another, like VLC. I'm using the PuppyBrowser, but I think I'll switch to Firefox (it's included). I have not tested every included app with my machine (a Pentium dual core laptop).
Summary
Installing an alternative operating system is easy with this distro of Linux called ?Lucid Puppy.? Download the .iso file, burn it (they recommend burn 'slowly') to a CD with a utility like imgburn, Look on the Puppy website and copy the instructions, including the tutorial on how to get it on a USB drive. The Puppy Linux site has lots of information about what it can do, like; Abiword, a MS Word compatible word processor;
InkscapeLite is a vector drawing program;
Gnumeric an Excel compatible spread sheet;
Seamonkey browser, plus Foxfire, Puppy (which I?m using) and other browsers;
mtPaint is like Windows paint;
SeaMonkey mail and news email client;
ROX is the file manager. This takes the place of Windows explorer.
Ayttm is a chat client.
Osmo the personal organiser.
Internet Connection Wizard .

Read the online info to see how you can get an old computer running ? without having to fix a broken hard drive. Just run the machine from a CD. Newer computers (2001 or so) that boot from USB can go that route. And the system is FAST.
This is my first experience (a couple of hours so far) with Lucid Puppy and I think that this OS could replace Windows (except for running hard-core computer games).

Overview:
This Pup attempts to mirror a Google Chromebook.
The concept is similar to Blue Pup in that it is intended to be simple & familiar in order to attract new users to PUPPY with all its benefits.
It does however have a dual personality in that it can just be used in the cloud centric fashion of a Chromebook or as a normal Pup. Pretty much anything can be installed via PPM & QUICKPET.

Main Features:
It is based on forum member vicmzâs OpenBox Precise built by him with Woof-CE 0.3 with kernel 3.9.11 PAE. That in turn was based on Precise 5.7.1.

Setup:
Having completed the usual first-run screen, reboot and create a 512 MB savefile. If it hangs at the prompt and does not offer the option to create a savefile just type ârebootâ then press enter in order to display it. This may happen but only once.
Security Issues:
Chrome:
In order to run as root and to get Videostream and âO/K Googleâ working almost all the sandboxing in Chrome has been disabled. In addition the usual warning messages associated with running in that mode have been suppressed. Please therefore do not use this Pup for Internet banking. For that purpose forum member Greengeek has produced a dedicated secure Pup called Banksy 3.

Final Thoughts:
In this form this Pup will not match the speed of a real Chromebook.
In order to do that, it would require a later kernel and the same full install/f2fs configuration used in Blue Pup V6 which does rival a Chromebook when installed to SSD. If the concept finds favour I will pursue that option.
A similar distro by the name of CHROMIXIUM is due to appear on DistroWatch.
Currently in Alpha form, OOTB it uses Chromium and is based on a custom 32 bit Ubuntu 14.04 build with the LTS kernel 3.13. It mimics the logon of Chrome OS and the ISO weighs in at 925 MB.
Have fun. The ability to search Google straight from the Apps panel is a delight.
